How Broken Families Rob Children of Their Chances for Future Prosperity

Instead of learning the differences between right and wrong at home, many of the juvenile delinquents who were surveyed developed their moral code from other outside the home. Health and consistent practices help to create positive outcomes for parents and children. If parents create the same house rules and hold their children to them, they develop a sense of security and stability. Broken homes, negative interactions between parents, physical punishment, and negative parent-child interactions lead to delinquency. “Broken home or family” is used to describe a family where one or both parents are absent.

This is why I believe that we need to start calling a spade a spade, or in this case, calling children of divorce as we are literally. It is time for ourselves, and hopefully society eventually, to give us the agency to be the best version of ourselves, in spite of our past, particularly an event that we had no control over. Being a child of divorce is a part of our lived experience, not our primary identity from which our personhood is based on. What many may not understand is how the term "broken home" may lead to a generalization that these children are "troubled", just because what they can call home is no longer functioning properly.

In the past, many poverty experts neglected and even denigrated these influences. They argued that providing money and a "helping hand" would be more than enough to overcome the effects of broken families on children. I created this site to share high-quality research-based content on kids, parenting and navigating the school system. When parents are harsh and unloving toward each other, the children learn from the negative behavior modeled. Positive modeling begets positive behavior, and negative modeling begets negative behavior. Even if parents are not in the same home, they should still pay attention to their child’s friendships, whereabouts, and activities and share the information with each other.

If parents are present and involved with their children, there is a far lower likelihood that their children will exhibit delinquent behavior. Detachment is one of the biggest causes of juvenile and adult delinquency. When children come from broken families, the likelihood of them experiencing some sort of detachment rises. There are many ways to identify this lack of attachment and other signs of a broken family. Therefore, children who come from unstable but intact families can experience the same or more severe adjustment issues as children coming from broken homes .

If a family is broken but still living together, a child might benefit from the parents separating. If the child has seen or experienced abuse, neglect, or violence within the home, he or she is at higher risk for short and long-term mental health challenges. Welfare without work distorts the work ethic by giving something for nothing, and these families transmit this distortion to their children. Instead of a five-year limit on Welfare, Congress should require work by all recipients immediately.

Children of unmarried parents/separated families often fail and are at risk emotionally. However, this may not be completely applicable in all instances of broken homes. Some children irrespective of home background or structure may work hard and become successful in life. The environment where a child finds himself/herself goes a long way in determining his learning ability and ultimately his academic.

In addition, the evidence indicates that the income of divorced households with children drops significantly, thereby lessening the likelihood of asset formation. The psychological impact of a poor family broken home can carry over until they grow up. The scientists found that children with single parents were twice as likely as the others to develop a psychiatric illness such as severe depression or schizophrenia, to kill themselves or attempt suicide, and to develop an alcohol-related disease. Open communication between parents and kids is another key ingredient of a healthy and functioning family. Dysfunctional families drive delinquent behavior in children due to the lack of attachment. If children feel as though no one cares about them, they are more likely to seek out attention in negative ways . They might also try to get attention from their parents in negative ways because of the example set by the parents in the home.
